  • Vintage Dark Shadows Games: No PhD in Applied Vampirology Required to Play

    Michael Barnes
    16 May 2012 | 1:14 pm
Great art adorns this Dark Shadows game by Whitman—they don't draw ’em like they used to; they used to be so groovy. By the numbers, the cult classic, gothic horror soap opera Dark Shadows ran for a whopping 1,225 episodes during the 1960s and early 1970s, not including a few misfired attempts at rebooting the series in the 1990s and 2000s, as well as a pair of feature films. The show has never really died out, thanks to faithful fans and endless syndication. But now, it’s in the mainstream eye more than it has been in decades thanks to a new Tim Burton film based on the show now in…

(Photo: Setorii Pond) When I was a little girl, I rarely played with Barbies. I was all about Matchbox cars, playing with lizards and beat my brother at a game of football. As I grew older, I found high heels and flowing dresses spoke to me more than sports jerseys and basketball shorts did, but my tomboy roots were never far away. To this day, I have a stylist to do my hair and makeup when on TV, and I cannot put together an outfit beyond jeans…

  • Chicago’s Randolph Street Market Offers Something for Everyone

    Gregory Watkins
    15 May 2012 | 1:40 pm
Chicago’s beautiful skyline is the backdrop for antiques & vintage shopping at the Randolph Street Market Sally Schwartz has been a collector her whole life, so it is no surprise that she gravitated to antiques shows as a profession. But when she looked at what Chicago had to offer in the way of a big, funky antique show where someone could find anything from a Tiffany lamp to recycled industrial lighting to original art, there was a big void. “There was nothing in the city,” she said. “It was just a big hole.” So Schwartz set out to fill that void. The result is the Randolph…
  • It’s All in the Marks: ‘County of Origin’ Marks help Date Pottery & Porcelain

    Mike Wilcox
    15 May 2012 | 7:50 am
A "Made in Japan" mark. One of the easiest ways of determining the origins of pottery and porcelain is finding a country of origin marking, such as “Italy,” “Germany,” “France” or “England,” but what many don’t know is that such a marking can indicate a maximum age for such an item. The reasons these markings came into existence were market-share and trade tariff laws that came about with the increase in international trade. One of the earlier marks was instituted by Great Britain in 1887 to protect British producers from cheaper goods imported from Germany. It was…

  • Dealers, Living in Their Small World

    admin
    27 Apr 2012 | 8:38 pm
There is no better way to understand the state of being a decorative arts dealer than going out and visiting their shops. Each one is an island unto itself, with the proprietor and his staff (hopefully) available to show the inventory and (hopefully) engage in a conversation about “the trade”. However as an industry, they should be speaking with one voice that can clearly articulate and implement a fresh image and promote more business. Sales + marketing = public perceived success. Throw in an effective lobbyist, and maybe things would happen. What got me to thinking about this dealer…
  • A New Reality for Auctions, in the Decorative Arts

    admin
    5 Mar 2012 | 10:14 pm
I was advised that my bashing the Duopoly auctioneers is a bit overdone. Perhaps is it, but looking at the state of divergence between the decorative and fine arts markets, these auctioneers realize which one has reduced maintenance and storage costs which tend to be pretty high and fixed, for an easier way. Now is a great opportunity for collectors but also dealers who see the hand writing on the wall; the private treaty format was conceived for these 800 pound gorillas to play the role of a dealer. The fine arts trade in a very crisp format that works well for the auction process. A huge…
  • A New Decorative Arts Reality

    admin
    3 Mar 2012 | 6:45 pm
Over the last 10 years there has been an amazing divergence in how the decorative and fine arts compare in growth and how they are marketed. Fine art has become the playground of a younger as well as older generation while the decorative arts are treated as an appendage to the interior design trade. With today’s ultra minimalism of less is more, the walls of any home offer the biggest and cleanest palate to start decorating. How can you best complement that starting point? My business has had a long history of working with many incredible designers who created interiors for the rich and…

He probably was here to hopefully do the sets for a Broadway show or for whatever! He knew Newel and loved being there to play. And so it was at Newel in those times. The antiques business was a sideline enterprise compared to the rental side of the business. Photographers of the best caliber rented from Newel for advertisements and fashion spreads. At that time, the theater business was thriving and every Playbill noted in the credits, “furniture and furnishing from…

    22 Dec 2011 | 8:55 pm
As this year draws to an end I can’t help but look back over the last decade, and realize how my business and its industry have evolved. Ten years ago we lived in an emerging internet world, and the start of the decline in the traditional decorative arts. A decade or so before, when the Japanese art speculation bubble burst, decorative arts were considered rock solid. Are period decorative arts really and finally getting rediscovered, and how will the industry make adjustments to continue to grow? For me my first seminal experience in the industry was a decade ago, in 2001. It was the year…

  • Should I get written valuations for my antiques? What about additional insurance?

    Susanna Pickle

It's all the Antiques Roadshow's fault.  I'm often asked by shop patrons or people at shows "How much is this worth?"  I don't mind the question as it usually leads to an interesting discussion with a new antiquing friend, some of whom become customers.   Everyone has something that used to be great-grandfather's and they want to know how much its worth.  Other people seek out and collect something specific, like carnival glass, flow blue pottery, clocks, steamer trunks, etc.  And after awhile they have several of these inherited or sought-after antiques floating around their home. If…

Yeah, I know this is a bellows, but it's a bit perplexing on just what it is used for. The valve where the air comes out is on the side (circled in red) and the bottom of the bellow has a mesh bag containing some sort of rock or charcoal? It was really hard to tell exactly what was in the bag or how this might be used. But the readers of this site are great and I'm sure can explain it all. Share your thoughts and answers in the comment section below. I'll probably have a really "duh" moment when I find out the answer, but for now I am stumped. Last week's Mystery of the Week.

After living in Maui, right next to the rainforest on the Road to Hana, I became enamored with bromeliads, and specifically, air plants.  After all, what’s not to love about a plant that seems to spring out of thin air, requires no soil, and only needs watering in the sink once a week?  Air plants are the “it” plant for 2012, as they have endless display possibilities. For my first air plant display, I decided to go all out, and I have a dozen air plants, technically called tillandsia, from the air plant supplier Growing Curiosities.  I found their prices to be very…

Laundry rooms and I have always had an eclectic relationship.  When my husband and I lived in the Hollywood Hills, our laundry room was outside on our deck, which was tucked into a gorgeous hillside with trailing leaves and lush foliage.  I loved doing laundry there – until the raccoons decided to live under our deck and torment our dogs.  When we lived on the slopes of Haleakala on Maui, next to the rainforest, our laundry room was also outside, which was fabulous unless the trade winds were not blowing – meaning the mosquitos were biting me as I was sorting our colors.  Now we have…

  • Kentucky Derby Glasses, Hats and Horse Racing History Books

    5 May 2012 | 2:12 pm
It's a fun tradition for ladies to wear big-brimmed flower and ribbon trimmed hats at the Kenticky Derby. Some designers specialize in over-the-top toppers. Read "Crowning Glory: The Art of Kentucky Derby Hats". This one's relatively conservative.  Although ladie's hats have been fancifull for decades (at least).  Here's an illustration from 1902 from this Edwardian fashion history blog: http://edwardian-clothing.blogspot.com/ HORSE RACING BOOKS & DERBY HISTORY The Kentucky Derby Official Website Blog:  http://blog.kentucky-derby.net/ Read Horse Racing History…
  • Collecting: #Vintage Bauer Pottery - Let's Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

    5 May 2012 | 7:00 am
There's plenty of info out there about this day and its importance to Mexico. This site has several info links: Cinco De Mayo Sites. If I were still living in Southern California, I'd pull out one of my vintage Mexico-themed tablecloths, and set  the table with my colorful vintage Bauer Pottery dishes, and have a PARTY! I'll bet you thought I'd say FIESTA, and then show you pix of vintage Homer Laughlin "Fiesta" dishes. But I don't collect Fiesta. I used to collect Bauer Pottery, and still have a lot of my fun rainbow-colored collection displayed in my kitchen. I am especially…
  • Fascinating Story of Folk Art Sand Paintings in Jars by A. Clemens

    4 May 2012 | 8:00 pm
The artist who created these beautiful bottles in the late 1800's was Andrew Clemens (1857-1894) of McGregor, Iowa, who was a deaf-mute. The Victorian-era craft is called MARMOTINTO, and Clemens was the undisputed master.  The sand is tightly packed, but not glued.  It could take the artist 3 weeks, or 3 months, or sometimes up to a year to complete one bottle.  These antique glass bottles are filled with tiny grains of colored sand, all placed by hand, with what was basically a long-handled hook (see pic of tools at left). Absolutely amazing, right?!  This really rare…

  • A Vintage Turquoise Hair Dryer Adds Retro Pizazz To Shop Display

Vintage Hair Dryer Creates A Retro Feeling I loved the addition of a Turquoise vintage hair blower to this shop display. Spotted at "Body Talk" in   Avon, CT., a trendy women's apparel shop which always has terrific displays. This turquoise hair dryer  was a baby boomer delight. The dryer is not for sale, but the contemporary styled apparel is! Just to be clear...Body Talk is not a vintage shop......but you will find plenty of  new clothing styled to remind you of earlier collections.  C. Yard Sale Bloodbath

  • Wonder Woman. Weed Pipes. West Seattle.

    Meghan
    15 May 2012 | 4:47 pm
West Seattle was this weekend and Karl was out of town and Jenny had family in town. I pretty much go to West Seattle twice a year (if that) and I usually see my friend Hayla when I go. We have met up for lunch during the sale a couple of years back. So, I sent her a message to see if she had any desire to hit up sales and a plan was made to meet around 8:30. My day started off crappy when I was unable to get gas at two different gas stations using two different cards – what is going on here!?!?! Amazingly enough there were two sales right on Hayla’s block. She purchased a small child’s…

    Meghan
    11 May 2012 | 5:28 pm
Hmm … until today I had no idea that compulsive shopping is called Oniomania. Who knew?!? Maybe some of you have wiki’d that shit. I guess when you go to enough sales, there is going to be a darker side to sales in general. I remember going to a sale in 2005 where the woman had purchased rooms and rooms of clothing, all of it duplicates in different colors. She would get one shirt and buy it in 30 colors. It was super strange and sort of made me feel uncomfortable. I called Jenny after hitting a compulsive shopper sale last Sunday, and she said something about there being a difference…
  • Wackiest record covers at yard sales

    Jenny
    10 May 2012 | 5:02 pm
I’ve been seeing a few collections of the worst, funniest, or most ridiculous LP covers here and there. We’ve certainly encountered our share of gems in the wild, so I thought I’d put together a post of our own. Both of the quality LPs below are on the GROSS RECORDS label. This one Karl pointed out, saying it’s one of his most hated record covers, all because of the dog’s mouth. At first I thought he was crazy, but after staring at it for a while, I started to see what he means. “You Figure It Out!” Okay … We had a comment on our flickr page…

Saturday I was riding solo. (My husband said that makes the blog more boring, since we don’t get any extra dialog between us.) Honestly I knew that I wouldn’t be out that long, but I wanted to hit this sale down the street from me that we hit last year. Maybe you remember it’s when I purchased two ’50s Mexican circle skirts. Their sale (that they called the Designer Sale this year) didn’t start until 9:00, so I found a couple of sales starting in the 8:00 / 8:30 time frame and headed out. The first one was huge. It might not look huge, but they continued to bring stuff out over…

    Meghan
    4 May 2012 | 5:42 pm
Here are some recently unearthed old-time hunting photos from the estate sale last week. It seems like a stretch that these people would keep canning items covered with saran wrap for 25 years. Maybe this is the couple that the letters that Jenny mentioned are about. We will never know. When hunting and camping was all the rage and you needed to have your hair “set” each week, so you better keep it in a scarf. Long before Cabin Chic. It’s a wonder how they just got by with a nice wool jacket instead of the fancy base layers, digital equipment and camouflage. I am amazed they didn’t…

  • Rookwood Pottery Aerial Blue

    Donna McGill
    4 May 2012 | 12:51 pm
Produced for just one year, between 1894 and 1895, the Aerial Blue pattern has a beautiful translucent gloss with grayish-blue hues throughout. What’s so surprising about these patterns is often, the blue that comes through isn’t a result of the painting, but rather, the blue found naturally in the clay. Of course, it’s accentuated, but rarely is a pottery piece created with its natural elements as part of the design process. It’s truly a remarkable collection and even more surprising is it was discontinued after just three months. While there aren’t any…
  • Roseville Pottery Orian

    Donna McGill
    30 Apr 2012 | 6:06 pm
The middle period line that’s all about vivid colors and a rich gloss glaze is Roseville’s Orian; curiously, it’s also one that’s often overlooked. Considered art deco, this contemporary collection offers those vibrant colors this time period is known for and certainly presents the willingness to take a risk that Roseville Pottery was known to do. In the mid-1930s, during the height of its popularity, it was referred to as a “solid color line that is a real achievement in ceramic art…inspired directly or indirectly by the Chinese vases of the Ming…

    Donna McGill
    25 Apr 2012 | 1:21 pm
There are countless patterns, glazes, shapes and color combinations that define the Roseville Pottery as a whole. One of those themes is the creativity and elegance found in those lines of florals. Some are definitive, such as the Roseville Sunflower or Apple Blossom collections and others are a little less obvious, such as those sometimes found in Roseville Crystal Green, which, incidentally, remains difficult to find. We thought we’d explore two of the more recognized Roseville Pottery lines: the Roseville Water Lily and Roseville Sunflower. There are a few similar features, but for…

    23 Apr 2012 | 2:25 am
Born in 1914 in New York City, Rose Cabat knew early on where her place was, at least in terms of who she was destined to be with. Shortly after marrying the “boy next door”, whom she dated all through high school, Cabat made the decision to to see what kind of, if any, magic she could bring to the American art pottery scene. The avenue she chose was ceramics, mostly because her husband Erni brought home clay one day with the goal of making a few dinner plates. Sensing her interest, he soon bought his wife a membership to Greenwich House. It was here that both her talent and…
  • Fulper Pottery: Backstory

    16 Apr 2012 | 9:04 am
Even though Fulper Pottery was incorporated in 1899, it had roots that went as far back as 1814, albeit under a different name. The Flemington, New Jersey company was first the brainchild of Samuel Hill. He too called New Jersey home and was a well respected producer of crocks, jars and drain pipes. Hill passed away in 1858 and before long, Abram Fulper decided to begin purchasing as many of Hill Pottery pieces that he could get his hands on. Fast forward to 1899 when the company was incorporated. William Hill Fulper II, Abram’s grandson, transitioned into the role of secretary and…

We spent all of last week at the Brimfield Antique Show, the largest outdoor vintage and antique event in the Northeast. For those who have never been, the show includes 20 independent fields. Each venue opens on different days, and runs for various periods of time. This gives shoppers, especially early birds, several opportunities to get first dibs on fresh merchandise. When presented with a dizzying amount of great finds, it is important to have a shopping strategy in place so you don’t over spend or catch a bad case of buyer's remorse. Below are five simple rules we abide by that helps…

ReAcoustic's Vintage Gramophone Yes, it is possible to hear contemporary tunes played on a vintage gramophone, or at least through its horn. • Kentucky Derby and the Mint Julep!

    [Your Name Here]
    5 May 2012 | 1:36 pm
The drink of choice for most sports from Football to NASCAR is beer, but here is a head scratcher, why is the Mint Julep associated with the Kentucky Derby? First off, the drink is steeped in southern history. Back in the 1700s the average plantation owner slurped down a julep before breakfast because it was widely believed that the magical drink offered protection against malaria. Flash forward to 1875, when the first Kentucky Derby took place, the Mint Julep was the drink of choice being served in the club house. Finally, in 1938 Churchill Downs made the Mint Julep the official drink of the…

This Hubley Toy boat available at Vintage Lancaster on Etsy. Plastic Boats Then I was reading an old Cyanamid Employee Newsletter I had stuffed in my office that I had come across over the years,  and it made mention of a melamine boat.  I suppose back in a day and age when wooden boats were "the only thing" around coming out with a plastic boat may have only been but a dream and a crazy one at that.  Although it's safe to say the boat did float, but I can only imagine over time a heavy melamine boat may indeed crack or sink, so over time boats were indeed perfected into…

Behold: The Pistachio Cat Melmac Dish. Okay, at first glance I admit, I was appalled that someone would deface precious melmac! Upon closer inspection I realized that this Etsy seller ThreeTangerines is thinking of creative ways to use dishes that just aren't nice enough to use or sell as is.  Turning the plastic into something fantastic, she is re-purposing old melmac dinnerware into something artsy for your home. Better than putting them into a landfill don't you think? As for the cat, well, it's a bit groovy isn't it? What do you think?
  • Russel Wright Flair Woodland Rose

    Ira Mency
    10 Apr 2012 | 1:24 pm
Russel Wright Woodland Rose is probably THE rarest and hardest patterns for me to have found as a Russel Wright Melamine collector. Probably because the FLAIR line designed by Wright and made for Northern was one of the later developments in melmac history and too much was happening during this time. Russel Wright Flair by Northern in Woodland Rose Pattern Why Woodland Rose is Rare Going into the 1960's with any melmac would soon prove to be a challenge as melmac was indeed, past it's hey-dey. Pricing on melamine would change meaning dish production was more costly.  You will have to…

Even when the ball's not around they are still into party aspect of plastics.  Like these great stacking cups available at Laura's Last Ditch on Etsy. Close up thanks to Laura's Last Ditch on Etsy.  From Chicagoland comes this hard molded plastic. Is it melmac? Or a form thereof? Who knows. I first saw the balls all over the place in the 1980's though many people say they've been around since the 1960's--I wonder if this is indeed true. Could it be they are so used to seeing the like-look of Massimo Vignelli's Heller…

A typical verge 17th century lantern clock with alarm feature to dial centre. These clocks are hung from a hook on the wall and they have one weight which drives both the striking side and going side of mechanism. As a result these clocks go for 30 hours or less on a full wind. As this is such a broad subject for discussion, I can only give a few important pointers in the development of English Lantern Clocks.  I will try and answer any questions you may have through my main website. The earliest practical timekeepers in homes in this country were the lantern clocks. They deserve discussion…

I have featured  many antique clocks from the 17th/18th and 19th centuries, as you probably know I am not a big fan of most 20th century clocks. There are still some fun clocks made during this period though and I will focus on a few here. The clocks I will be discussing here are so-called novelty clocks. You will see from the picture above there are lots of things you can collect that are really fun and interesting. We have a selection of bicycle clocks, one of these even has a barometer in the back wheel. You can ocassionally see such items on your travels but as with anything…
  • Regional Characteristics of Antique Grandfather Clocks

    Pendulum of Mayfair
    20 Apr 2012 | 5:31 am
The production of cabinets of antique grandfather clocks throughout the 18th and 19th century centuries was seperate than the clockmaker who produced the fine antique clock movements. As you can imagine communities stayed very much together during this time and people did not travel long distances in the main. As a result you will notice every area of the country in the 18th century had a very different case style. It is very easy to place the manufacture of an antique clock cabinet from just a very few features on the cabinet. For example with the production of longcase clock cabinets in…
  • Vienna or German Wall Clock ?

    Pendulum of Mayfair
    13 Apr 2012 | 6:05 am
The term ‘Vienna Regulator’ wall clock is commonly used to describe a narrow weight driven wall clock. All these clocks seem bundled together in one big group. In my opinion this is wrong, there should be a clear differentiation between a true ‘Vienna Regulator’ clock and the later ‘Vienna Style Regulator’ wall clock or  properly described as a ‘German  Regulator’ wall clock. Vienna regulator wall clocks are very special and an original example can be very expensive. These clocks were manufactured throughout the 19th century, but most were…

I have worked in the field of antiques all my life and one specialist sideline I have is in interior design. Interior design is an important part of any home and should be considered before any purchase. I love antiques and it is my belief that an antique grandfather clock should be central to any new interior design project. Antique clocks provide a superb focal point and they add so much character to any room setting. It is a misnomer that you can not furnish a new home with antiques and that you need an old 18th century house. Antiques fit in any home to compliment the decor. I have…
